About this course

Subcontractors are the backbone of the construction industry, yet many are operating in increasingly challenging commercial environments involving complex contracts, aggressive risk transfer and tight project margins. In practice, many subcontractors encounter commercial difficulties not because they lack technical capability, but because they have not been given the contractual, commercial and legal knowledge needed to properly protect their position.

Increasingly, subcontractors are finding themselves working under heavily amended contracts, informal arrangements or verbal instructions, often without fully understanding their rights, obligations and commercial risks. Main contractors frequently rely upon this lack of commercial knowledge, particularly in relation to payment rights, notices, time obligations and the protections available under the Construction Contracts Act 2002.

The Streetwise Subbie – Commercial Survival for Subcontractors is a practical, implementation-focused training course developed specifically for New Zealand subcontractors across all trades. The course focuses on the real commercial and contractual issues subcontractors encounter on live projects and provides practical tools to help participants manage risk, improve commercial outcomes and protect their entitlement to payment.

Delivered by Raine Selles, the course draws upon extensive experience advising contractors, subcontractors and project teams across complex construction and infrastructure projects.
